2020 in Project Management: Trends on the Horizon
As a new decade approaches, several trends have come to the forefront in the project management industry. The last ten years have seen a surge in technology usage, changing how project management work is done and measured. In 2020, technology will continue to shape the industry in exciting ways. Work is no longer limited to an onsite office, and the tools available to project teams today have created new paths for efficiency and creativity. Here’s a look at four trends we expect to take center stage in the new year.
Artificial Intelligence
AI capabilities have alleviated some of the busy work from project managers’ lives. Tools can handle a variety of tasks, including scheduling, follow ups and other organizational needs. Other AI offerings are adept at recognizing patterns and raising the alarm about potential issues before they arise. With menial tasks off their plate, project managers can dig in on the human side of their roles. AI is creating a more streamlined process and consistent positive outcomes. Expect to see more widespread implementation of these tools in 2020.
Remote Work
Across all industries and many types of jobs, remote work has moved from novelty to highly requested benefit. Project managers are not only leading remote teams, they’re working remotely themselves. This model allows for the best talent to be sourced regardless of location. Remote work can even boost productivity, if the right tools are in place. Establishing clear guidelines for availability, deliverables and communication will set remote teams up for success. In 2020, we anticipate more teams will make the jump to at least partial remote work and the option will move toward an expectation, rather than a benefit.
Software as a Service
Software as a Service (SaaS) tools are commonplace in the project management industry already, but 2020 will see the launch of new platforms and updates that tap into the AI and remote work trends. SaaS platforms touch every part of the project management process: team communication, invoicing and billing, time and inventory tracking and more. Having the right tools in place makes life easier for the entire team and supports the option to work remotely. Here at Manta Ray Consulting, we’re proud to offer The Hammer Solution, a subscription-based cloud service that includes The Drill Down Analysis and Cost Estimation tools. In the new decade, we expect to see experimentation with new tools seeking to automate processes and support project managers in the day-to-day.
Soft Skills
With technology accounting for a large part of trends in the industry, it’s refreshing to see a renewed focus on skill sets beyond data, analytics and cost management. Soft skills like communication, people management, conflict resolution and emotional intelligence are ranked as most desirable skill sets for employers. Thanks to improved AI and SaaS platforms, project managers have more time to strengthen these skills and focus on the people that make up their teams. With remote workers, maintaining personal connection is even more imperative. In the next year, we’ll see content from thought leaders on building up these soft skills and job descriptions that place those qualifications high on the list.
